Network server delay in processing live data
« on: March 02, 2009, 05:55:11 PM »

Why does all my live data stop being processed any were from 7 to 20 sec
when network is updating?

I know my internet conection is not allways fast but it should not stop
processing live data.

Thanks!

I think its got something to do with the coding. I had a similar problem and was trying to figure out what started it but in your case it could be a slow connection causing this.

See this thread when STORM had similar problems with connectivity.

By the way what speed tests are you getting? Have you tried turning of the network flights and sharing the data ?

Thanks E14

The box is blinking with data but the software is preoccupied
with the network update! Doesn’t happen when network
is off.

Support any way around this, please don’t tell me I need a faster
internet connection.

Software need to lose that dependence!

Does the network connection have a minimum bandwidth specification?  That is, does the RB require a X kb/sec and if so, what is the X?

We can't answer that question in detail. Anyway we can tell you that no more than 150 Kb are downloaded each minute (when network is on). The upload rate is much lower than that.

My Question to Support:

Support, Why does all my live data stop being processed any were from 7 to 20 sec
when network is updating? The box is blinking with data but the software is preoccupied
with the network update! So for 7 to 20 sec I lose data, doesn’t happen when network is off. I know my Internet connection is not always fast but it should not stop
processing live data. Support any way around this, please don’t tell me I need a faster
internet connection. Software needs to lose that dependence when processing Network data. Can you fix this in the new Release?

Thank You,

P.S.I think with a few software adjustments, RB will be with out question the best system available.

My reply is when not connected to the network it runs fine.
Struggling to cope with the network. So what’s the fix?

kdt1,

I have seen this problem - when I've been using a mobile broadband modem in an area with a poor signal.  So, your problem does suggest an Internet connection problem.  It's not the overall connection speed, but a result of times when the flow of data seems to stop.  I see this with mobile broadband when a web page won't load for ages, then it loads really quickly - the connection speed is OK, but not all of the time.

I'd guess that your problem goes away when you deselect Network data?

kdt1,

Not sure why you are not answering our question. We did NOT ask about how fast is your connection but your computer specfications.

Please remember when the software gets the network update, it has to update/add/remove/move position of over 1000 aircraft. This is not an easy task and if your computer is finding it hard to cope with your local flights of 20 or so then of course the network download will take a few seconds to process.

Another good reason to implement my earlier suggestion to have an option to only download aircraft visible on the current map - see Feature Request - limit network download

Apart from the instance with my poor mobile broadband connection, I've never had an issue with the processing of 1000+ network tracks, even running RB on my Atom processor Asus Netbook.  I can't say that I really notice any great draw on the processing.

Maybe it's more of a logic issue - RB looks for Network data, doesn't get it - but keeps on looking, giving priority to this rather than local processing?  Maybe a shorter period of listening for the Network?

What you want to check on is if your computer is thrashing.  I bought a Laptop a year ago, and it did not have enough memory in it, as the hard drive was always active, and things were slow.  I put 2 Gig of RAM in it, and it worked much better.

Hard to say what to check, as there are so many different versions of windows out there, but look at your task manager and see how much memory is available, or see if the CPU is maxed-out when the network targets are turned on.
