RB Performance
« on: July 27, 2008, 01:40:25 PM »
Over the last couple of days the performance of my RB has dropped dramatically.
I live in West Norfolk and I have been used to making contacts on the South coast and even into France. I am now struggling to get contacts 50 miles away.
Could it be to do with the weather? I am using the standard supplied aerial and I have changed nothing on my lap top or on RB.
Any ideas would be welcome.

Check the connections? any power surges or similar in your area?

The recent good weather has caused some isloated storms in the UK.

If you have checked them and still the same contact support via the ticket system and if your under warranty we can check to see what has gone wrong.

I may have found the problem. I took the bottom off of the supplied aerial and the centre wire was not connected to the metal screw.
Trying to resolder it back on I melted some of the plastic casing. Can I get a new aerial from AirNav as a spare part or is there somewhere else I can get one from?

I understand that AirNav have sourced the antennae from

http://www.panorama.co.uk/

Edit:

I have been corrected, and I have been told that AirNav do not source their antenna from Panorama.

Loose wire/bad connection in aerial was almost certain to be the problem. Now picking up contacts on the south coast and Wales as I was before. Have bodged up the original aerial, just need to find a new one.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks Nortonbeak for that information. Do you know which aerial it would be and what conection I would want to fit my RB.
As you may realise, I am not a technical person.

Malc,

Take a look at this as far as connecting an antenna is concerned.  You just need a simple adaptor if it's a non-radarbox type plug:

I've used my SBS-1 magnetic antenna with such an adaptor - you used to be able to buy the SBS-1 antenna, but I can't see it listed now.  The performance is pretty much the same as the RB item, although it's a bit bulkier.

Thanks Allocator, I have a mag mount aerial that I use for my scanner. If I fitted the wire antenna from the RB and fitted a connector as you describe to it, that may work.

You could give it a try.  This looks like the adaptor as sold by Maplin.

Got a connector and it works fine, it seems no different to original.

Back to normal, and once again thanks for all your help
